As with any new venture you have to take a baseline reading. Where does your company stand in regards to content marketing? Are you currently using it? Do you even know what it is?
Now is the time to be honest. If you know absolutely nothing about it that’s okay. There are companies and services out there that will help you get caught up.
Make the decision that you and your company are going to embrace content marketing and have it become a permanent part of your selling efforts.
This is easier said than done. If you a starting from ground zero, developing a strategy can feel like an impossible task. Here are some things to consider when developing a strategy to use website content to sell.
Determine where you need to invest to compete with those in your industry. Take a look at what the competition is doing. Where is there content showing up?
Set tangible goals that you can track. There has been much debate over the ROI of social media marketing. Some say it is a waste of time and effort while others think of it as the Holy Grail. What do you want your content marketing to do? Do you want to build your email list? Have people sign up for your seminar? Request a demo or free sample? These are measurable results but if you don’t know what your outcome is you will be lost.
“Build it and they will come.” That is one of the most famous movie quotes of all time but for marketers it needs to be tweaked a bit. “Build something that they want and they will come.” You could put out mountains of content but if your customers are not interested in it they will soon look elsewhere to have their needs and wants met.
Listen to what your customers are saying about you and your industry. What questions do they want answered? What are they complaining about? What do they really, really like? You can get the answers to these (and many other) questions by finding your customers on social media and searching for terms related to your industry or product.
Selling with website content takes time. You need to establish trust between you and the consumer. By providing valuable content you will not only sell more but you will create loyal customers who trust you and your company.
